Immigrants' Families Ask Schumer to Oppose Deportation of Parents - Manhattan, New York

Immigrants' Families Ask Schumer to Oppose Deportation of Parents
Immigrants families demanded Saturday that Senator Schumer support legislation that would decrease deportation of immigrant parents with native-born children.  NY1's Ty Chandler filed the following report.

Protesters lined outside of Senator Charles Schumer's Midtown office Saturday, to encourage him to introduce the Child Citizen Protection Act to the Senate - a bill that has already gained support in the House.

The measure would allow judges to take into account the best interest of children who are U.S. citizens if their immigrant parents face deportation.

Many of the protesters came from families split apart by deportations.

Betsy DeWitt, a rally organizer is raising three sons alone, after her husband was deported to Italy - a country he had not set foot in for forty years.

"They should have considered our family before he was deported, " said DeWitt.

The City Council passed a resolution last month in support of the bill.

"We just can't keep ripping families apart in the name of homeland security. That does not make any sense, " said Democratic Queens Councilman John Liu to the assembled crowd.

Six U.S.-born children attended a rally with their mother - to say how their father was deported to Senegal last summer, and that their mother could soon suffer the same fate.

"It's been really hard for my mom to take care of me and my siblings," said one of the children.

Rally organizers told the attendants to pick up their phones in the middle of the event to call Senator Schumer's office to send the message that they want the bill introduced now.

"We cannot keep on waiting, our families are being torn apart," said rally organizer Juan Carlos Ruiz. "Our communities are being terrorized. So, we want Schumer to hear that message."

It's important that they understand that families should be kept together,," said DeWitt.

NY1 reached out to Senator Schumer's office about the Child Citizen Protection Act and is awaiting a response.

Concerned gente seize MSU campus bridge for IMMIGRANT RIGHTS!

MEXA de MSU, Chicanos y Latinos Unidos and Students for Economic Justice would like to thank everyone who came out to  support the Bridges Not Borders! event that was held today from 12-1:30 p.m. at the Well's Hall bridge on Michigan State University's campus.

About 20 supporters  of ¡Puentes SI, Paredes NO! successfully blocked the Well's Hall bridge for approximately 20 minutes before there was a complaint and the police showed up.  Anyone that wanted to cross the bridge was kindly, but firmly told that they needed proper documentation in order to pass through our blockade of banners.

It was very exciting and reaffirming to see a good number of the "crossers" let us know that they understood our reasons for our immigrant solidarity action today.  On the other hand, it was very sad to see that people were so disturbed at having to go 5 minutes out of their way, when inmigrante's have to go for days and miles out of their way, through what is usually rough, arid terrain.

This event was only to try to minutely represent the difficulties, pain and sacrifice that comes with creating and enforcing unjust, racist borders!

The purpose of blocking the bridge was to highlight the severity of the current immigration and border politics.  We find that among so much anti-immigrant sentiment, it is imperative that we look to measures that do not seek to merely punish, detain and ostracize.

As Americans, as Mexican Americans, as other oppressed gente's around the world, we must express passionate, non-relenting advocacy and support for the rights of all immigrants, regardless of documentation.

NO ONE SHOULD BE DYING ON THE BORDER!
NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO HIDE BECAUSE OF LACK OF "PAPERS"!
NO ONE SHOULD BE AGGRESSIVELY HUNTED DOWN LIKE ANIMALES!

NO HUMAN BEING IS ILLEGAL!

**********************************************************************************
CROSSING BORDERS COMES WITH NEVER-ENDING ADVERSITY AND SACRIFICE.
NO ONE "WANTS" TO RISK DEATH, RAPE & DEPORTATION.
...NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TOO!

Border Deaths:
-Last year, the US Border Patrol found 463 dead bodies of those trying to get across the border--a 42.5% jump from 2004.
-During the past 3 years, nearly 1, 500 people have died trying to cross the US/Mexican border.

Border Enforcement is Racist:
-88.8% of agents are assigned to the US/Mexico border.
-In 2001, 3.4% of border patrol agents were along the border with Canada even though the 9/11 "terrorists" entered through the US/Canada border. http://trac.syr/edu/immigration/reports/143/
-We must denounce anti-Immigrant vigilantes for what they are--THE REAL THREAT TO NATIONAL SECURITY!

THE REALITY IS THAT OUR BEAUTIFUL GENTE'S ARE BEING HUNTED DOWN LIKE ANIMALS, KEPT IN DETENTION CENTERS AND THEN CRUELLY DEPORTED, DISCARDED, USED...THIS IS DISGUSTING!

....BUT STILL OUR CORAZONES ARE FIERCE AND APASIONADOS, OUR BEAUTIFUL HISTORY CONTINUES TO BE SHARED
...NUESTRAS CULTURAS CONTINUE TO THRIVE, TO SURVIVE!

Hasta La Victoria,
